A litany drawn from Psalm 27
Should we be consumed by darkness, lost to the good by diminished hearts,
Let us then, flee to your fortress of light.
Should we feel beleaguered by others, or worse yet, be at war with ourselves,
Let us then, flee to your fortress of light.
Should we tremble at the thought of ruin or disgrace, feel abandoned to the fates,
Let us then, flee to your fortress of light.
Should we be bereft of all beauty, overtaken by the littleness of our lives,
Let us then, flee to your fortress of light.
Should we come to exhaustion, find all inspiration failed,
Let us then, flee to your fortress of light.
Should we rush ahead by our own lights, or order our lives by the fashion of our times,
Let us then, flee to your fortress of light
Should we fear that our gifts and the striving of lifetimes come to naught,
All: Let us then, O God, find refuge and strength
in your fortress of eternal light.
