A Prayer for the Sick

Worship leader brings supplicant forward, as song is sung
(e.g. Pass Me Not O Gentle Savior, O Healing River’)
The congregation gathers around him/her, laying hands on him/her, some taking him/her by the hand.
Anointing:  oil may be poured on supplicant’s forehead by elder while saying,

The Lord bless you, __________________, and keep you,
The Lord make that face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you.
The Lord lift up that radiant countenance upon you, and give you peace.
Amen.

You, O God, who are our very breath, nearer than shadow, who in love have called us,
holding us in your hand,
we turn to you in this hour of need in the life of ___________________, our sister/brother,
pleading that she/he may know she/he is not forsaken in the struggle.

Be her/his shield from fear and dread.
Be to her/him a spring of refreshment and hope.
Be her/him company in isolation and despair.
Be her/his patience midst tears and exhaustion.
Be her/his relief in strain and misery.
Be her/his well-being when overtaken by weakness.

Mend, we pray what is injured or amiss,
Even as we watch with ____________________
in hope and patience, expecting your word of healing.

Reach out your hand to her/him now, doing for herhim what we are powerless to do,
Even as we have reached out to her/him in love,

Raise her/him up to fulness of life,
For love of this our sister/brother, and
For love of your son, our Savior, Jesus, we pray. Amen

Embraces by the congregation, “Peace be with you, _______________”
Supplicant is led back to his/her seat during following song.

Songs as all resume their places
e.g. ‘There Is a Balm In Gilead’, ‘Healer of our Every Ill’,  ‘O, It Is Jesus’,
‘Healing River’, ‘Lord, Listen to Your Children Praying’
‘Jesus, Won’t You Come By Here’
